Ragnar reached the perimeter of Nyheim. The walls were high and imposing, topped with barbed wire and surveillance cameras. There was no visible entrance, no sign of life. The facility was silent, watchful, menacing.
He circled the perimeter, searching for a way in. He found a section of the wall where the ground sloped slightly, allowing him to climb. He pulled himself up, his muscles screaming in protest, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
He dropped down on the other side, landing silently on the soft earth. He was inside. The facility was vast, a maze of buildings connected by concrete walkways. The air was cold and sterile, the silence broken only by the hum of machinery. He moved cautiously, staying in the shadows, his senses on high alert.
He found a door, slightly open. He slipped inside. It was a laboratory. Rows of metal tables lined the room, covered with strange equipment, wires, and tubes. Computers flickered, displaying complex data, cryptic symbols.
In the center of the room, he saw them. His daughter. Kai.
They were in glass containers, suspended in a clear liquid, their bodies still, their faces pale. Wires and tubes were attached to their heads, their arms, their legs.
Ragnar rushed towards them, his heart pounding, his voice choked with emotion. "Ingrid! Kai!"
A voice echoed through the room. "Ah, Ragnar. You made it."
Ragnar turned. A man stood in the doorway, tall, thin, his face pale, his eyes cold. He wore a white coat, a symbol of his authority, his power.
"Who are you?" Ragnar demanded, his voice trembling with rage. "What have you done to them?"
The man smiled, a cruel, twisted smile. "I am the director of Nyheim. And they are part of the future."
"The future?" Ragnar scoffed. "This is not the future. This is madness!"
"Madness?" the man chuckled. "Or evolution? We are creating a new world, Ragnar. A better world."
He gestured towards Ingrid and Kai. "They are the first. But they will not be the last."
Ragnar lunged at the man, his fist clenched, his grief and rage boiling over. But the man was too quick. He stepped aside, and Ragnar stumbled, falling to the ground.
The man raised his hand. A panel on the wall slid open, revealing a row of buttons. "It's over, Ragnar," he said, his voice cold. "It's time for you to join them."
He pressed a button.
A surge of electricity coursed through the room. The lights flickered, the machines whirred, and then…
Darkness.
